Lavender Field Summer Senior Pictures | Kiera | Benton Community High School

October 11, 2024 Lehia Erger

Lavender field summer senior pictures with Kiera

Newbo District | Pine Hill Farm | Pleasant Creek State Park

Kiera got the PRETTIEST day for her senior session! Her mom reached out EARLY to get her on the books for late July, the same time of year I did her sister’s senior photos a few years ago. Her sister’s session (her blog here) is STILL the hottest session I’ve ever photographed to this date! (Or it may be tied with the wedding I photographed in Aruba (that blog here)… So dang HOT!) So we were a bit worried that it would be a crazy hot day for Kiera. We met for her consultation, came up with some ideas that we thought would fit her aesthetic, as well as a mini family photoshoot we were going to do in the middle of her session. A few days later, I was looking at her questionnaire I had her fill out and I realized her favorite color is lavender and we have a local lavender field that allows photographers to rent the field for an hour. I emailed her mom and asked if they’d be interested in doing part of her session there, including her family photos. They discussed and weighed the pros and cons, and ultimately decided to go for it. And of course I was pumped to do something unique!!

Session day came, and almost the whole fam joined us for the day (remember, family photos were also happening later on). We met up for hair with Ingrid and makeup with Lindsey and Kiera LOVED how it turned out. And yes, that’s a spray tan for Bare Tones she’s sporting! And then we headed right outside our doors to hit my favorite spots around Newbo.

We spent a lot of time at the first spot, and hurried through the rest, as is typically with photoshoots with me - ha! And then it was time for an outfit change as we headed to Fross Park in Center Point to use their easy-to-access soccer net for some quick soccer photos!

After squeezing feet into a brand new pair a shoes, a round of bug spray and some fun experimental shots, we changed and headed out to Pine Hill Farm for the lavender field. It was mosquito-crazy out there but smelled oooh so good! We used half the rental time getting some SUPER cute photos of Kiera in the lavender and then Dad arrived and it was time for everyone to change into their family photo outfits. We snapped a few quick ones of the whole family, and then just the sisters. What a beautiful family! I’m so glad they did this - it sure can be stressful to plan for, but it’s worth it to have a quick update on family photos before everyone moves away and get busy with their own lives.

Time was up, so we headed out to Pleasant Creek Park where we would spend the remainder of the night. I chose this location because it had a few things that Kiera had gotten excited about: a willow tree, beach and long grass. We started at the willow tree. This area isn’t easy to walk into. The grass is LONG and thick. And we spent a lot of time getting there, got bitten up my mosquitos and left pretty quickly. But there were some wildflowers that we got photos with, of course!

As we waited for the sun to get lower in the sky, we headed to the beach area. I honestly thought we would have more sun on this spot at this time. So I pivoted and I decided to have some fun with the lighting here. It’s not my typical go-to style but after looking at my regular lighting vs this lighting, Kiera liked the vibes and uniqueness of this so we shot the whole location this way. I love it too - it just gives an ulta-summery vibe!

And then we went to head to my long grass location and the sun was just.. gone. So we turned around and tried to chase it down the hill and it just wasn’t happening for us. I later found out that there was a lot of extra cloudiness happening from wildfires up north and that would be why our sunsets were “off” that day and a few days following. But I honestly loved the unique vibes I was getting from this spot as well. Between the wildfire smoke and the campground fire smoke, we were getting hazy mountain vibes and I just enjoyed doing something a little different again! But we were still pretty bummed that the sunset was just gone.

And just like that, Kiera’s session was done! Isn’t she just a natural?!

Greenhouse Summer Senior Photoshoot | Kenna | Kennedy High School

August 22, 2022 Lehia Erger

Summery Greenhouse Senior Pictures with Kenna

Culvers Greenhouse | Downtown Cedar Rapids | Wanatee Park

Wayyyyy back in the winter, Kenna’s mom reached out about senior pictures. I had started getting inquiries for senior pictures SO early compared to normal and I was impressed!! Kenna and her family were referred to me from a friend and past client of mine, which I always love to hear. We had talked about sunflowers, more of a modern urban look and a greenhouse so we set a date for August (when their friend’s sunflower patch was supposed to bloom) and then stayed in touch until our first in-person meeting.

When we met up, the sunflower idea had been veto-ed but everything else was a “go!” And what a small world it is, because when talking to Kenna about her spray tan, and professional hair/makeup I had set up for her (part of my senior package) she knew the spray tan artist (Katrina at Bare Tones) AND the hairstylist (Aubree at Moxie Salon) already! She had yet to meet her makeup artist, Krysta (Make Me Up) but I KNEW she’d be obsessed with her makeup. Spoiler alert - she was!

We started our day at Moxie Salon for hair and makeup, and then headed to some cute spots around downtown Cedar Rapids for a clean, modern urban look.

(Enjoy some behind-the-scenes pictures, courtesy of Kenna’s mom and bestie)

I LOVE how this outfit looked in this library location!

Next, we hit up Culver’s Greenhouse (with their permission, of course) - which I haven’t been to in FOREVER, so I was a tad nervous about how that would go. The lighting was bright and trickier than I thought it was going to be but Kenna was patient and we LOVED how they turned out!!

I’m not going to lie- this close up was semi-accidental!! I was standing WAY to close for the shot I was trying to get, but snapped one anyway and it ended up being one of their FAVES!

Laying down on these empty tables was pretty much an after-thought. We had taken all of the photos we were wanting to, were walking out and I decided to give it a go! I saw them empty as we walked in but thought that Kenna would feel weird getting up there in a dress in a public space. They joked about using them and I told them my idea and they were down for it! I KNEW I’d love these!!

Our last stop for the night was the park for some nature shots and the wildflower field I had scoped out. We had a few outfits to do here, which was perfect because I have a LOT of spots I love at this park! Walking into our first spot, the grass was wayyyyyyy longer than it normally is. It was a trek, but it was definitely worth it! And extra-worth it to find flowers back there!

Next spot was the middle of the tree-lined road - a senior fave. Aren’t these shots the cutest!?

It was a beautiful day. The sun shining the whole day, until RIGHT as we headed to the flower field. Sunny flower pictures are my JAM and I was a little bummed, but Kenna assured me she was still loving the images and after I agreed - I loved them too! And they have such a magazine-model-or-something vibe to them, too!

Doesn’t she look darling in a hat, too? Kenna’s summer session turned out so pretty and ended with a few TikTok creations in the sunset. Does a senior session get much better than that?

Sunset Wildflower Senior Photoshoot | Olivia | Prairie High School

July 20, 2022 Lehia Erger

Sunset in the Wildflowers Senior Pictures with Olivia

Newbo | Wanatee Park | Iowa Senior Photographer

Olivia’s mom reached out to me and I was so excited!! I had photographed her older sister’s senior pictures a few years ago (see her blog here) and enjoyed their family SO much. I have a younger sister so I KNEW not to expect the sisters to be exactly alike. While they’re both super-duper cute (obviously), Olivia seemed a bit more extroverted than her older sis and seemed excited to be in front of the camera… and felt comfortable doing her own thing!

After we met for our consultation, Olivia expressed interested in doing something a little more unique and fun. So I planned out our locations and threw a sprinkle of fun into the mix… literally! We stopped at Almost Famous Popcorn for some ice cream halfway through. But I’m getting off track - let’s start from the beginning.

We started off our day with hair and makeup. Since Olivia lives out of town, we decided to get ready at the makeup artists and we all ooh-ed and ahhh-ed over her home and beautiful photos on the wall. With Chelsea on hair and Lindsey on makeup, I knew she would look perfectly natural and fresh-faced! Isn’t she a stunner!?

Our first stop was exploring the Newbo area. We stopped at all my favorite go-to spots and discovered some fun, gorgeous spots along the way. Right away, before we started taking any photos, I told Olivia to not worry about “holding a pose” and keeping still - to feel free to keep moving a little if she felt like it. And she immediately went into model mode and I LOVED it! Do you love this green as much as I do??!

(Behind-the-scenes photos, courtesy of Olivia’s mom!) I love show examples of “what I see vs. what you see!”

And look at that ADORABLE ice cream picture!!

After ice cream, we changed outfits and discovered JUST how dang windy it was that day. Or maybe it had just picked up at this point. I don’t know, but I DO know that it was a struuuuuggle to get Olivia’s hair to stay where we wanted it. But you’d never know looking at her pictures!

View fullsize DSC01200 edit.jpg
View fullsize DSC01267 edit.jpg

I had to keep the next image just because it was too funny not to! I was snapping photos of Olivia and her mom got curious about the grape vine behind her and went to check it out, without knowing she was directly in the shot. Of course I snapped this photo and included it in her slideshow during their ordering session (when I come to their home and show them their photos for the first time). There was definitely some laughs!

Have you noticed how GORGEOUS her eyes are yet?!

We were struggling with the wind but ended up getting some good shots just in time to leave. And off to Wanatee Park we went! We tried some new spots, and wrapped up with my favorite go-to locations. It was hot and sweaty but that lighting was perfect! And how cute does she look in that color??

My seniors LOVE the tree-lined roads out at Wanatee. I mean, I do too! So after an outfit change, we did some quick pictures in the road (you have to be quick here, because even though the cars go slow, the park is always busy).

And the last thing we had planned for Wanatee - the reason we were there - was the flowers!! Out at Wanatee, the sun seems to sink below the horizon faster than any other place. So to save time, we just jumped across the street to the little patch of flowers next to the road. And honestly, I actually LOVE how the sun looks filtering through the trees. Magical!

We actually had one more stop planned for Olivia’s day. We rushed out there as the sun was setting, but in the end, she just didn’t LOVE that location/outfit as much as these and we veto-ed them to keep these ones! So none of those are shared here, but it was worth it just for the crazy adventure.

Natural and Unique Senior Pictures | Chloe | Union High School

Casual & Natural Senior Pictures with Chloe

Downtown Cedar Rapids | Center Point, IA | Iowa Senior Photographer

Chloe and her mom reached out in May about doing her senior pictures. They were purposefully looking for someone outside of their school’s normal senior photographer and wanted to travel outside of their area so she could have some fresh locations and a different look to her senior photos! I was so excited they found and chose ME! We planned out every detail of her session, scheduled hair and makeup (always a good and FUN choice), and anxiously waited for her photoshoot day. The day of her photoshoot was a little warm (not rare for July) but breezy and ultimately, PERFECT!

While Chloe got pampered with hairstyling by Chelsea (from Acacia Salon) and makeup by Alyssa, her mom and I planned out which outfit would be used at each of the locations we picked out!

20210722_161458.jpg
20210722_163414.jpg

Then it was off to start the night! We parked outside of Eastbank Venue in downtown Cedar Rapids and walked around, explored, tried locations I’ve used before and loved, found locations I’ve never tried before and changed outfits MANY times! It was a blast!! Chloe’s style is more natural, casual and comfortable, so while we DID do some dressier outfits, we did also did a lot of casual, true-to-Chloe styles. Starting with her go-to sweatpants! She laughed when she asked me if we could do a few in them, but I was excited to try something new! She was nervous to start but I posed and reassured her, and the first time I showed her the back of my camera,= she KNEW that these were turning out WAY better than she imagined they would and I watched her confidence sky-rocket. It was amazing!

We stopped for a quick outfit change and did some with her dance jacket. Dance is Chloe’s main sport, and I could definitely tell throughout the rest of her session! Especially when I asked her to walk towards me like a model a few times. SOO poised and perfectly postured!

View fullsize DSC04586.jpg
View fullsize DSC04554.jpg

After her dance outfit, we headed to the building I’ve never been to OR photographed at before, but have been wanting to try. So she put on her more polished outfit and went for a little (long-ish) walk. The windows made it an amazing place for photos, and the road at the end was only used for a parking lot so we were able to get our road shots easily and safely. I think they turned out amazing!!

Then we headed back to our cars, hit up a parking garage and changed into Chloe’s FAVORITE outfit. I loved the grunge-y vibes I got from it, but wasn’t sure we were close by anything that matched that aesthetic. We WERE right next to a construction site but I thought to myself, “if you ask them to shoot there, they will think you’re a crazy person.” But then, Chloe’s mom asked what I thought about using it.. so it was fate! I showed Chloe the back of my camera to make sure what I was capturing was what she was looking for, and she loved them! So, I think we nailed the “unique” portion of her senior pictures!

We wrapped up our urban/grunge part of Chloe’s session and headed to Center Point. I’ve been taking SO many seniors to my hometown and it’s been wonderful. The bridge is always a bit hit and something a lot of my senior ask for, which is perfectly fine with me because it photographs BEAUTIFULLY. And I think this outfit in this location was SPOT on!

And last, but certainly not least, is the continually-requested flower field! Chloe wanted white flowers, which was easy-peasy and just off the main road coming into Center Point. The sun was low enough now that it was hiding behind a building which gave us these soft, pretty colors for the last portion of Chloe’s senior pictures, perfectly matching the soft colors of her dress.

Spring & Fall Double Senior Session | Reagan | Cedar Rapids, Iowa

November 18, 2019 Lehia Erger

SPRING & FALL DOUBLE SENIOR SESSIONS

Newbo Market | Ellis Park | Kennedy High School Senior Photographer

This past Spring as the trees started to bloom with the gorgeous flowers, I HAD to photograph them. In the Spring, snow is still melting and people are just starting to willingly come out of their homes after a long, brutal winter. Let me just put it this way - most people are not booking photoshoots at this time. It’s also graduation season and seniors are graduating while juniors are stressing about finals and the end of the year. They’re not ready to think about senior pictures yet!

I had this vision of a gorgeous (soon-to-be) senior girl in the golden sunset light with these blooming trees, but it had to be done SOON, because these flowers fall as fast as they come. I put out a model call and Reagan answered - and I’m SO glad!! She made my vision come to life!!

We only spent a little time taking photos since I just needed a few to share, but she and her family LOVED her photos and knew they wanted to book a full senior session for Reagan in the fall! So today, I get to share my first senior session from TWO different gorgeous seasons!

Every day when driving home, I saw these blooming trees overhanging the sidewalk as the sun shown through them. It was easy access and would be perfect for my mini-session model call with Reagan.
(A few examples of what I see (photos of Reagan) vs. what someone else might see (cell phone shots))

62403210_1624370504363268_4008485753221808128_n.jpg

We even set up my lighting to make it seem like it was sunset-y and glowy for a few photos - it was exactly what I had envisioned!!

I knew I had the photos I was wanting, but I wanted to make sure it was worth Reagan’s time too (since she so graciously volunteered last minute for me) so we played around in the other trees and nature trail a little bit, which made it a great practice run for her full senior session. (And spoiler alert… she NAILED it!!!!)

We scheduled Reagan’s next photoshoot for the end of October, really crossing our fingers for those fall colors! And Mother Nature delivered. The colors were unreal. And with that red hair of hers… OhEmGee.

We threw around some ideas of locations and ended up choosing the Newbo area because of the cute buildings and Ellis Park for the colorful trees and water! Did you know that colorful trees + water = DOUBLE the color because the water reflects the fall colors!? Yeah.. it was gorgeous!

We met at Newbo Market and started our adventures from there. Reagan is SO adorable and awesome about posing. She NAILS the serious face every time. It was like walking around with a model the whole night, she made my job so easy!

After a few outfit changes, we made a pit-stop to get some photos with her pup and brother, and then we were on our way to Ellis Park!

I just couldn’t stop taking photos. We barely had to move around in the park, it was so pretty everywhere! And spending the evening with Reagan and her mom made my cheeks hurt from smiling so much. They’re two peas in a pod, and so much fun!! And it’s Reagan just SO gorgeous?!

It was the perfect senior session: fun outfits to match Reagan’s adorable style paired with a perfect, sunny day to just relax, explore and laugh while capturing some AMAZING images. Best day EVER!!!

Feminine Senior Photos | Kira | Kennedy High School Senior Portrait Photographer

UNIQUE & FEMININE SENIOR SESSION WITH KIRA

Paramount Theatre | Squaw Creek | Eastern Iowa Senior Photographer

Oh, I can’t wait to share of the adventure we had on Kira’s senior session! I met with Kira and her dad at Hyvee and the excitement she felt about getting her senior pictures done just RADIATED from her. While usually I communicate with the seniors’ parents through the process, Kira had such a vision, her dad just sat back and let the two of us plan her session. The first step, though, getting her braces off! We planned her session for a few weeks after she FINALLY got her braces off - which she was PUMPED about!

IMG_4509.jpg

Throughout the next few weeks Kira and I texted, staying in contact about her upcoming session. When she sent me a photo of her brand new smile the day she got her braces off, my heart just soared for her!!! And it made me feel AMAZING that she felt comfortable and close enough to me already to send me her super excited selfie. I LOVE my job!

We planned out Kira’s session a few days before her photoshoot, everything was “weather depending.” It had been raining and raining all week leading up to her session, including the day before, so I was a little worried about the outdoor location I had chosen be super muddy. (Spoiler alert: It was.)

Kira and her family chose my “Celebration Package” which includes lots of pampering for the senior. A few days before her session, she stopped by for the BEST spray tan at Sol Sisters in Newbo. (They really are the best! Kira even said “I am so happy with my spray tan! It’s the best one I’ve gotten!! Sol Sisters did so good!”) It happened to work out perfectly because she had Homecoming the next night. The afternoon of her session, Krysta from Make Me Up met Kira at her house and made her feel like a million bucks with her natural, classic makeup look and perfectly curled hair. She was glowing and Kira raved about how much she loved Krsyta!

I arrived at Kira’s house and while she enjoyed a quick meal of chicken nuggets, I started setting up her bedroom for the first part of her unique senior photoshoot. We catered her senior photos to all about her… Part 1 was about her obsession with FUZZY BLANKETS!

MC5A7886 edit.jpg

This was TOO much fun. I do feel bad about the number of feathers they probably had to clean up after the session was over. But, it was WORTH IT! Next up, Part 2… the Paramount Theatre!

Kira asked me about using the Paramount Theatre for some photos because of her love for theatre, music and performing. I told her I doubt they would let us in but I would look into it. Sure enough, they allowed us to rent it. The WHOLE thing. It was so detailed and gorgeous, but the lights throughout the building were pretty dim… it is a theatre, so that’s expected. But it forced me to get a little creative with lighting and ideas, and boy am I glad we had Kira’s mom and grandma (visiting from Florida) there to help us out!

MC5A8015 edit.jpg

After a few outfit changes and A LOT of stairs later, it was time to move on to Part 3 of Kira’s unique senior photos.. my backup location at Squaw Creek Park in Marion. The two other locations I had picked out for her were a muddy mess, so Squaw Creek it was! Squaw Creek is were 95.89% of the area’s local photographers go for photoshoots and it was FINALLY not raining. I knew it’d be packed out there, and it was, but Squaw Creek has so many options, I knew we would find some perfect spots.

Kira brought to special outfits that she just wanted a few photos in, because they represented her! 1. Her “Happiness” jacket from her school activities and her UNI outfit because she’s SO EXCITED to be attending UNI next fall!

MC5A8032 edit.jpg
MC5A8113 edit.jpg

Kira’s last outfit was my favorite! A classic, feminine two-piece outfit with a bit of a vintage vibe. Right up my alley!

MC5A8124 edit.jpg
MC5A8215 edit.jpg

We spend the rest of the daylight finishing up her senior photos as her mom and grandma ooo-ed and awww-ed over the gorgeous golden sky. Kira is SO. GOSH. DARN sweet and I loved spending the day with her, her mom and grandma. I feel like I hit the jackpot that they chose me. What an AMAZING girl, and what a blessing to have gotten to know her!
